Why did God create us to sing to Him? This is one of those splendid mysteries of God’s creation. Why did He create the pleasure of food? The warmth of family? The human body with two arms instead of four? At bottom and back of it all, we know that all which God made, He made good and with a purpose. And for His glory.
Singing is human. You were made to sing, and made to sing to God. It is not inconsequential or negotiable. To not sing to God does not make you more human, but less. To withhold from singing does not restore God’s broken image in your life but further tarnishes it.
Singing to God is not useless. It is life. Consider how the Bible talks about singing. If you do not sing to God, you cannot please God. But when you sing to God from the heart with others (Eph 5:19-20), you will be doing the very thing you God created you to do. Singing to God with others is like eating together with others: to do it well is to do it for God, and to do it for God is to enjoy God’s work of redeeming all things in Christ Jesus, including in your own particular life.

Singing is worship and obedience to God
Ps 65:1: Praise is due to you, O God, in Zion, and to you shall vows be performed.
Ps 66:1-2, 8: 1 Shout for joy to God, all the earth; 2 sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise! 2 sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise! 8 Bless our God, O peoples; let the sound of his praise be heard,
Ps 67:3-5: 3 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! 4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth. Selah 5 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you!
Ps 149:1-2: Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the godly! 2 Let Israel be glad in his Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King!
Heb 13:15: Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.

Singing is rejoicing in, and because of, God
Ps 9:2: I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

    Singing is bodily obedience

    Singing is living
Ps 6:5: Turn, O Lord, deliver my life; save me for the sake of your steadfast love. 5 For in death there is no remembrance of you; in Sheol who will give you praise?
Ps 30:9, 12: “What profit is there in my death, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it tell of your faithfulness? 12 that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!
Ps 88:10: Do you work wonders for the dead? Do the departed rise up to praise you?
Ps 104:33: I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being.
Ps 115:17, 18: 17 The dead do not praise the Lord, nor do any who go down into silence. 18 But we will bless the Lord from this time forth and forevermore. Praise the Lord!
Ps 137:3, 4: 3 For there our captors required of us songs, and our tormentors, mirth, saying, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!” 4 How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?
Ps 150:6: Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Singing is continual as living is continual
Ps 63:6: So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.
Ps 104:33: I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being.
Ps 146:1-2: Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! 2 I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

Rev 14:2-3: 2 And I heard a voice from heaven like the roar of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder. The voice I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps, 3 and they were singing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and before the elders. No one could learn that song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth.
Rev 15:2-4: 2 And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire—and also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name, standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands. 3 And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, “Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations! 4 Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.”

    The LORD is your song.
Ps 40:2-3: 2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.
